City Update: September

Hello all,
We are very excited about all that is happening here in Conway and specifically the Oakwood community.
Next Friday September 10 we will begin renovating the Hope Community Center. The community center will serve as a safe haven for the entire community of Oakwood and the surrounding area.
We will be continuing tutoring, counseling, provide meals and provide washer and dryer facilities for the community.

Week of Action Recap

This week the City of Hope Outreach partnered with the United Way of Central Arkansas during their Week of Action. It was a truly great week as the community of Conway was served in some great ways.

We Need Your Help

We have been blessed to  purchase a mobile home trailer that will serve as the main center for the Oakwood Community. This trailer will be the primary location for 3R’s Tutoring, counseling, King’s Club  and other activities to serve the Oakwood Community.
We were blessed to receive a donation of $3,500 for the purchase of the [...]

Paternalism

A father comes into the bathroom and sees his thirteen year old son getting ready for school. The father proceeds to grab his toothbrush, apply toothpaste and then begins to brush his son’s teeth. The boy is an outstanding student and does well in sports. What is wrong with this picture?
Paternalism can be defined as [...]

The Gospel and Social Justice

When we think in terms of social justice, what comes to mind? I’m sure many of us would point to sex-trading, poverty conditions, inequitable education, substandard housing, communities savaged by drug proliferation and other social, political and economic inequities. There is an ongoing discussion about the role of social justice in regards to the Gospel [...]

How do you define poverty?

If you were asked to define poverty, how would you define this word? For me I previously defined the word in terms of lacking something and more specifically lacking food, clothing and/or shelter. Yet if you ask those who are in impoverished situations, their definitions are radically different. Most people that I have spoken [...]

What’s Going on in the City

God bless everyone. The Lord has been doing some great things in Oakwood and I am very excited to share them with you.
Emilio and Nancy Update:
February 20, 2010 was a life changing day for Emilio and Nancy. We were blessed to share in their life as we and many volunteers in Conway assisted them [...]

Oakwood Community Meeting: Highlights

The community had its first meeting on Friday February 19. This was a pretty productive meeting as residents spoke about their concerns for their living conditions, possible solutions and also pulling together resources.

Two highlights:
One resident was in need of finances to pay his rent and upon hearing this need during the meeting, another Oakwood resident offered a [...]

Fresh Start: Emilio and Nancy M.

This past Saturday, we had over 70 volunteers come out for the Nehemiah   Project to serve Emilio and Nancy M. This gospel opportunity sought to address their living conditions and place them on a road of reunification with their granddaughter. Is 58, declares that when God’s children fast in the manner he has called them, [...]
