City Update: September

By phillip on

Hello all,

We are very excited about all that is happening here in Conway and specifically the Oakwood community.

Next Friday September 10 we will begin renovating the Hope Community Center. The community center will serve as a safe haven for the entire community of Oakwood and the surrounding area.

We will be continuing tutoring, counseling, provide meals and provide washer and dryer facilities for the community.

One resident commented, “Make the trailer look different. Put Jesus all over it.” This mother never participates but has constantly commented on the changes that is occuring in the community. We praise God for what he is doing and will continue to do in Oakwood.

Please consider making a donation towards this renovation through the secure website.

Upcoming:

King’s Club takes off again on September 11, 2010.

Immersion September 24-26, 2010

Community Lunch with First Baptist Church on September 26, 2010

Lastly, we will be profiling our new volunteer staff in the next coming weeks. We are so thankful to have these young people aboard and serving the advance of the Gospel in word and deed.

Week of Action Recap

By phillip on

This week the City of Hope Outreach partnered with the United Way of Central Arkansas during their Week of Action. It was a truly great week as the community of Conway was served in some great ways.

Specifically in the community of Oakwood, Nabholz Construction built and completed a wheel chair ramp for a wheelchair bound elderly woman. Ms Demison is extremely grateful and “blessed” as she said in being able to leave her home and “look at her garden.” Below are some pictures of the Nabholz guys hard at work on the trailer.

Secondly, Kimberly Clark spent Tuesday evening supporting a family in the clean up and removal around their trailer as well as complete a new sign for the community of Oakwood. Here are before and after pictures:

Lastly, CoHO volunteers spent the week downtown on street corners during the lunch hour, creating awareness about poverty in our city and county. Below are some of the facts that you can be in prayer about:

cheyenne on the streets

  • There are approximately 121 homeless persons in Faulkner County
  • There are 4,149 children in Faulkner County living in poverty
  • 25% of uninsured people cannot purchase their prescribed medications

One reflection about this week and just some of the changes in Oakwood is based on Isaiah 58. God stated to the Israelites that a true fast would bear the fruit of them being known as “restorers of streets to dwell in.” Restoring streets, communities and people through the Gospel is not an overnight thing. It is a labor of grace and love. When you begin to see the fruit in people and neighborhoods, you begin to rejoice in being a part of God’s great design.

We Need Your Help

By phillip on

We have been blessed to  purchase a mobile home trailer that will serve as the main center for the Oakwood Community. This trailer will be the primary location for 3R’s Tutoring, counseling, King’s Club  and other activities to serve the Oakwood Community.

We were blessed to receive a donation of $3,500 for the purchase of the trailer and we will need to match these funds. How can you help?

We are looking for 100 people to donate $35 towards this facility. I am personally asking that you would be a part of this endeavor as we continue to bring hope to our city of Conway and specifically here in Oakwood.  You can donate securely online through our website at www.cityhopeoutreach.com  You can also mail in your donation to:

The City of Hope Outreach, P.O. Box 11474 Conway, Ar. 72034

In the memo section please specify, “Trailer”

All donations are 100% tax deductible. The City of Hope Outreach is a 501(C)3 faith-based nonprofit ministry incorporated in Arkansas.

Thank you sincerely for your donation and time.

  • Oakwood Community
    • Building and installation of a wheelchair ramp to provide an elderly woman access in and out of her home.  Thank you to Nabholz Construction and United Way Central Arkansas for the donation of materials!
    • Assist a family in the cleanup of their living conditions. This family will need a few strong hands and trailers to haul of trash and other unusable items.

Paternalism

By phillip on

A father comes into the bathroom and sees his thirteen year old son getting ready for school. The father proceeds to grab his toothbrush, apply toothpaste and then begins to brush his son’s teeth. The boy is an outstanding student and does well in sports. What is wrong with this picture?

Paternalism can be defined as doing things for people or people groups that they can do themselves. Paternalism unfortunately is what can characterize much of what we do as local churches and agencies not only here in America but also when it comes to mission work overseas. While we may have good intentions in helping those in need, we are actually putting ourselves in a position of superiority and stifling the God-given potential of individuals.

How can your local church begin to move from a position of doing everything for someone to coming alongside them?

Solid Relationships

Trust is number one, in seeing a person, group or community develop into vibrancy and shine as God intended it.  It is very helpful that local churches and individual Christians foster a relationship in which advice is synergistically shared, thoughtful critiques can be received and plans forward can be developed together. This may involve a simple lunch, sitting at the doorstep or simply listening. As we continue to develop these relationships, walls will begin to erode and God will use both groups for his glory.

Ask Questions

We would be utterly surprised to see the amount and depth of resources that God has present in the lives of people. Too often we perceive that in lower income communities or that a person in poverty has no type of resources. If we carefully and respectfully ask questions, we would begin to see that much of what is needed is already present.

What are the material resources already present?

Does the group or person already possess a certain amount of knowledge which can be worked with?

If you intend to do some type of clean-up or beautification of an area, who is present that is ready to work alongside your group?

Finally, is this person a natural leader? Are there leaders present in the community?

When you pursue these questions, you will begin to see that service does not have to be done to a person or community but with them. The ultimate goal is that we as Christians do create a community or person that has a welfare mentality but a man, woman or community that is seeking to use their God given gifts to bring glory to God and contribute to their community.
